Make Your Own Garden Kit!

This garden kit project is perfect for herbs, however it can easily be adapted to small vegetables or flowers, depending on what size terra cotta pots you choose. Try grouping your seed choices by theme and decorate your pots accordingly (see below for more ideas).

Mini Garden Kit
What's needed:

  • Terra cotta pots
  • Patio paint
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds
  • Kraft paper coin envelopes
  • Paper mache box or other container
  • Assorted rubber stamps, paints, etc.

  1. Paint the pots according to your color scheme, let dry, then put a clear coat on top.

  2. Paint the paper mache boxes (or other container) to match pots.

  3. Fill mini paper, or clear candy bags with enough potting soil to fill all the pots in the kit.

  4. Decorate coin envelopes, fill with assorted seeds, seal, then label. You can also use mini return address labels, printed with the name of the herb in packet, to seal envelope.

Old tins, perhaps even old lunch boxes, are a nice alternative to the paper mache boxes, if your pots are small enough.

Garden Themes

  • Culinary Herb Garden - Many herbs are easy to grow and do well in smaller containers. I don't know any cook that doesn't need fresh herbs at hand! Some of the most popular include: Basil, Chives, Cilantro, Parsley, Oregano, Rosemary, and Thyme.

  • Herbal Tea Garden - Why not offer an alternative to the usual cup of store-bought coffee or tea with homegrown herbal brew? An herbal tea garden is a wonderful compliment to a culinary herb garden, and most herbs are easy to grow and don't need to take up a lot of space.

  • Salsa Garden - If you know someone that loves salsa, then this garden kit would be right up their alley! Many salsa ingredients have the considerate habit of all producing and ripening at the same time, making them a fun and useful addition to any garden! Some good candidates include: Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Hot Chiles, Tomatillos, Garlic, Cilantro, Chives, and Onions.

  • Pizza Garden - Many pizza ingredients, such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, onions, jalapenos, basil, oregano, thyme, and parsley, require similar growing conditions (good soil, regular watering, and full sun), making them a great combination for your garden kit.

  • Bible-themed Garden - A unique idea for the spiritually inclined. Some herbs that are mentioned in the Bible, and would do well in containers, include Coriander (cilantro), Cumin, Dill, and Hyssop.

  • Healing Garden - Feel better with these amazing healing herbs: Echinacea, Milk Thistle, German Chamomile, St. Johnswort, Lemon Balm, Valerian, Cayenne, Astragalus, and more!
